At least once a week a potential client tells me that they want to move into “project management” roles.
I ask questions.
“Do you have a PMPI certification?”
“What type of industry do you want to work in?”
“What scope of projects do you want to manage?”
Around that time some folks start to think I’m throwing negative energy on their dreams. And that’s where they shut me down and say “thanks for your time.”
No harm no foul.
However, there are some wise folks who have the opposite reaction, they dig in, and as me questions about the questions I’m asking. We talk about the fact that there are often thousands of roles with the title or description of project manager open (just a quick search at Hershey, brought up 257)
If you want to be a project manager, go through the above questions for yourself and then dive deeper into the scope of the projects you have managed. This will help you as you begin to target the types of companies you want to work for.
Want to walk through a pivot from your current role to Project Manager? Schedule a chat with me and we’ll get started. (First call is always no charge, subsequent sessions are on a sliding scale between $45-150, where YOU decide what works for YOUR budget for each half hour we spend together).
Next week, for paid subscribers only, I’m going to dissect 2 different project manager roles that are currently open and give you an inside look at what a recruiter is going to be looking for when they sift through resumes for the positions.
Until then - have a great week and fid some joy at work.
